A riffle is not all one speed
Before the first cast, settle the soft pocket behind a rock in a riffle. A riffle is not all one speed. That is the whole job, not a new shopping list.
Do it in order
Do this and then stop: drift along the near edge of that pocket. If you cannot finish it on the bank, you will not finish it mid-cast.
The usual miss
Skip the version that depends on pounding the white water in the middle. That habit feels fast and costs the next ten minutes.
The test is ordinary. The drift stays in the slower strip for a moment. Pack so you can do it again with cold hands.
